Categories : Exhibition, published on : 4/2/26

An intimate exhibition that leaves a lasting impression

In the heart of Pigalle, the Musée de la Vie Romantique once again welcomes visitors with a sensitive and unmissable exhibition: Face au ciel – Paul Huet in his Time.

Presented for the museum’s reopening on February 14, Face au ciel celebrates the work of Paul Huet, a lesser-known yet pivotal figure in the emergence of French Romantic landscape painting.

Paul Huet and the Art of Landscape

Following in the footsteps of Ary Scheffer, Paul Huet quickly broke away from Neoclassical conventions, embracing a freer, more expressive approach to painting.

Described as “pre-Impressionist,” he paved the way for artists like Camille Corot, introducing a fresh sensibility in the perception and depiction of the natural world.

The Sky: A Space of Freedom

True to its title, Face au ciel highlights a central theme in Huet’s work: the sky. Whether luminous, threatening, serene, or turbulent, it mirrors human emotions.

Constantly in motion, the landscapes and atmospheres pulsate with contrast and light. Visitors encounter dramatic skies, vibrant light effects, and imposing, almost wild nature. One may traverse a stormy sea, a peaceful countryside, a thundercloud, or soft, muted sunlight, with the continuous impression that nature is alive around them.

Dialogue with 19th-Century Masters

To illuminate the singularity of Huet’s vision, his works are displayed alongside paintings by Eugène Delacroix, Théodore Rousseau, Gustave Courbet, and Eugène Boudin. This captivating artistic dialogue offers a fresh perspective on the vitality of the 19th century through Huet’s distinctive lens.

An Invitation to Contemplation

The exhibition’s intimate layout creates a calm, immersive experience. Monumental canvases immediately draw the eye, encouraging moments of absorption—a rare pleasure in Parisian exhibitions, often bustling and dense.

It offers a timeless pause, perfect after a day exploring Paris. Purely, simply, an artistic breath.
